Technical Midterm Exam

Name     Hanna Vongpraseuth                    Date    10/14/16

1.  Your camera tells you that 1/125 @ F11 is the correct exposure.  List two other exposures that would allow you to bracket around this reading.
       1/125 @ F8, 1/125 @ F16

2.  Fill in the intermittent apertures.
    F2  F2.8, F4, F5.6, F8, F11, F16, F22

3.  Fill in the intermittent shutter speeds.
   1sec, 1/2 sec, 1/4 sec, 1/8 sec, 1/15 sec, 1/30 sec, 1/60 sec, 1/125 sec, 1/250 sec, 1/500 sec, 1/1000 sec

4.  F22 would produce a shallower depth of field than F8.  TRUE   F

5.  While photographing a scene, the camera shows that 1/250 @ F16 will produce a correct exposure. Give two equivalent exposures for this reading.
    1/125 @ F22, 1/500 @ F11

6.  Which shutter speed would best stop a car moving across the frame.  A) 1/1000 sec  B) 1/30 sec              C) 1/4000 sec  D)  1/60 sec

7.  Dodging is the global adjustment that will darken areas of your image.  T or FALSE

8.An ISO rating of 400 is more sensitive to light than 800.  T  FALSE

9.  What is the difference between global and local adjustments?
Global Adjustments are applied to an entire image. Local Adjustments are not applied to the whole image. Local can be applied to a particular section of the image overall or individual layers.

10.  How many mega pixels you need to make a 8x12 print at 360 ppi? 12

11.  Name two tools in Photoshop you can use to adjust the density (brightness) of your image.  Levels, Brightness/Contrast adjustment

12.  Name three tools you can use in Photoshop to change the color of your image.  Hue Saturation, Color Balance, paint brush

13.  What is the best file type to use when emailing or posting pictures to the web?  JPEG

14.  What is the advantage of using adjustment layers?
Each adjustment layer is not permanent by what you apply to them. You are able to edit the image by each layer adding and removing or adjusting the level to the image, thus you are able to keep the original image (background) as it was.

15.  What color workspace is best used when editing photographs? For digital works, RGB; CMYK for printing

16.  A Histogram is a graphic representation of your image and can also be used to judge for correct exposure.

17.  Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the density of your image.  Graduated Filter Tool, The (Tone) Curve, Contrast

18. Name two tools in Camera Raw you can use to change the color of your image.
       Temperature and tint

19.  What is exposing to the right and what is its advantage.
This allows for the image to brighten up an originally under exposed photo to show more details.

20.  Draw a basic histogram for an underexposed image.

21.  Draw a basic histogram for an overexposed image.

22.  Draw a basic histogram for a correctly exposed image.

23.  What is the best file to use as a layered working file in Photoshop? PSD

24.  Name two advantages of having a larger digital sensor.
higher resolution, better for low light images

25.  Pixels of unrelated color and/or brightness to surrounding pixels are known as NOISE.

26.  Name two factors that would cause noise.
over sharpening an image or high ISO
27.  In camera raw what is the difference between the Vibrance controls and the Saturation controls.
Saturation changes the color of the overall image (ALL OF THE PIXELS) while vibrance simply increases the vividness of the colors. When using saturation with people in the image, you could darken the saturation to much to where the skin tones are not natural. This is where vibrance in a way can adjust the dull without involving saturation.

28.  Images made of pixels are known as vector based images.  T or FALSE

29.  Name two tools you can use to retouch a photograph. spot heal, patch

30.  Name three tools you can use to make a selection.  magic wand, quick selection, marquee tools i.e. lasso

31.  Name two tools in Camera Raw can you use to adjust a particular area of an image.  shadow, highlight

32.  When editing an image what does the term “clipping” mean.  i.e. highlight clipping.
Clipping occurs when the image is over exposed. This means that the brightest light area, the pixels are white, showing no depth.  In reverse, an under exposed image, the dark (shadow) pixels are black with no details in them.

33.  Name two advantages to shooting with a raw file.
Raw files allow for the highest quality/resolution of pixels in
an image. This means that you are able to work with more
details to allow for better (minimal) adjustments to a photo.
With jpeg,  the details (pixels) are compressed along with the
      colors.

34.  What software is best used to get the images from your camera onto your computer?  Adobe Bridge

35.  What is the best way to erase areas in an image?
using the layer masking tool, you can erase without damaging the original photo and can undo it.

36.  Name two controls in Camera Raw used to recover image detail.
       exposure, clarity

Bonus  +1 each

1.What year was the first digital camera produced?  1975

2.What is the temperature scale used to measure color temperature in photography?  kelvin

3.What president is on the $100 bill?  Benjamin Franklin (never was a President)
